Whitehaven to see a splash of colour this Summer!

This summer Proud and Diverse Cumbria will be bringing three days of fantastic FREE events to Whitehaven in a bid to bring a smile to the town!

by Danni Murphy

Last year, Whitehaven saw the inaugural Pride by the Harbourside take place, a fantastic event enjoyed by all who attended. This year it will return; however, Pride by the Harbourside will follow two other huge events organised by Proud and Diverse Cumbria as part of a three-day festival of colour, a celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance.

Thursday 1st August

The first of the events will begin with the grand opening of Colours Whitehaven, the brand new cafe/drop-in centre/hub opening its doors on King Street.

Colours Whitehaven will first and foremost be an information centre but will host various events, have a meeting space and also have space for a youth zone downstairs as well as a cafe. Follow their social media for updates and events at Colours Whitehaven.

Friday 2nd August

On the second day of the event, Proud and Diverse Cumbria have pulled out all the stops and have organised their Colours Community Festival, a huge FREE concert on the harbourside, with huge acts like noughties boyband sensation Blue, Whigfield, Sam and the Womp, and more! It’s going to be a fantastic event for all to enjoy. Although free, this event is ticketed for the arena. Click here to get your tickets!

The concert aims to allow anybody and everybody to come down and have some fun without having to fork out hundreds of pounds. Glenn from Proud and Diverse said, ‘We know a lot of people are struggling financially, and this is an opportunity for families to get together, come together, and create memories to last forever.

Saturday 3rd August

The third day sees the return of Pride by the Harbourside; a colourful celebration of unity and support for the diverse communities within our town and region. There will be trade stalls, food, goodies, activities, a funfair, and lots more exciting things to get involved in. As well as all this, there will also be live music from the legendary DJ Sash, Mary Kiani, Jenny Ball, and more!

If you want to sponsor the event or trade at the events, contact the proud and diverse team.

In a statement from the PADC directors and Committee members they said,

“These events are free, simply because we want to put a smile on faces and bring some joy to the town. None of this would be possible without the continued support of our sponsors. The council, the nuclear industry, and many more have been integral in making this three-day event possible.

We look forward to what the future holds with the new drop-in centre! We want people to realise that Proud and Diverse Cumbria is not strictly about supporting the LGBTQ community; we want to make an impact and attempt to eradicate all inequalities within our society, whether that is race, sexuality, or financial inequality.”
