The Wasdale Head Show returns this weekend

It’s Time for the Late Show

Held deep in the Cumbrian valley, The Wasdale Head Show and Shepherd’s Meet has been a popular event for more than 100 years and is set to return on Saturday October 8.

The show started its life with farmers from Wasdale meeting up with neighbouring farmers from Ennerdale, Buttermere, Borrowdale, Eskdale and Langdale. They would walk their Rams over to Wasdale Head to trade, hire or swap them and is the reason why the show is held so late in the year.

After World War II, motorised transport became more readily available to farmers and they soon gave up walking their sheep to the show. This therefore made the show more accessible to other people who were travelling long distances to attend the show.

Today the show has something on offer for the whole family and makes a great traditional day out. Why not join in on the Dog and Terrier Classes, Sticks/Crooks Judging Competition, Senior Hound Trail, Puppy Trail or even get involved in the traditional boys Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling event?

Show secretary, Mike Naylor, said: “All the planning is coming along nicely, and we always get a good response from people who attend. There’s still lots to do but we have had a lot of interest this year from traders so we should have a good mix.”

There are also fun competitions to get stuck into including The Best Beard and The Best Shepherd’s Boot as well as a Sheep Shearing Exhibition which proves popular every year. One of the latest attractions to the show is ‘’The Vintage Classes’’ which is one of the larger exhibitions as it attracts more vintage entries than others.

Helping with the typical Cumbrian weather organisers have also arranged an area where traders can set up their stalls in The Craft Barn, helping them to stay dry should the weather take a turn for the worse

Tickets cost £4 for adults and children go free of charge.
