Magical adaptation of much loved The Secret Garden – in rehearsals
Christmas is round the corner and Theatre by the Lake’s Christmas production, The Secret Garden, opens on 24 November.
The cast are currently hard at work in rehearsals and are throwing themselves into the fun and magic of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s much-loved story; with puppetry and live music in the show, they’ve got plenty to keep them busy as they bring the well-known characters to life.
The production is directed by Liz Stevenson, Associate Director at Theatre by the Lake who directed summer 2017’s smash-hit show Handbagged. She said: “It is an honour to be directing this magical adaptation of The Secret Garden amidst the beautiful Keswick surroundings this Christmas. Having had such a fantastic experience making Handbagged earlier this year, it’s exciting to come back with something completely different! I’m thrilled to be joined by an incredible team of designers and creatives, as well as a wonderful company of 11 actors to bring this story to life onstage. We hope the production will bring out all the mystery, magic and joyfulness of this very special story.”
Adapted by Jessica Swale from Hodgson Burnett’s classic book, The Secret Garden tells the story of spoilt and lonely Mary Lennox, who is sent to live with an unknown uncle on the wild Yorkshire Moors, a far cry from her aristocratic life in India. But as she delves deeper into the secrets of the house and family, she embarks on a journey of discovery which will change things at Misselthwaite Manor forever.
