Stomping feet and Wit and Wordplay at the Theatre By The Lake

As the cold winter evenings draw in, book yourself in for some fiery fiddle playing from the sensational Blazin’ Fiddles, or some madness and mirth from the delightfully silly Flanders & Swann, both coming to Theatre by the Lake in November.

Award winning Tim FitzHigham and Simon Townley star in this affectionate tribute to the madcap genius of comedy songsmiths Michael Flanders OBE and Donald Swann. The evening will include much-loved classics The Hippopotamus, The Gas Man Cometh, The Gnu, A Song of Patriotic Prejudice and Madeira M’Dear, along with many more of their legendary songs.

Michael Flanders (1922–1975) and Donald Swann (1923–1994) were school friends who went on to write over a hundred comic songs together and performed nearly 2,000 live performances between 1956 and 1967 of their hugely popular revue shows At the Drop of a Hat and At the Drop of Another Hat. Their songs are characterised by wit, gentle satire, and memorable choruses, and have passed into legend along with their anarchic sense of humour, wordplay and fun.

Next up, get yourself ready for some foot-stomping fun with the Blazin’ Fiddles and their sizzling Scottish tunes. Comprised of five of the hottest young contemporary fiddle players, all from various regions of the highlands and islands of Scotland, the award-winning Blazin’ Fiddles have delighted audiences with their unique style of music. With inventive guitar and piano added to the mix, Keswick audiences are in for a real treat.

The band embody the spirit of today’s Highland fiddle music, which has achieved them a world-wide following having performed in Canada to the US, Europe to the Middle East, from remote village halls to the Royal Albert Hall. During their show, the audience has the rare opportunity to hear solo pieces that feature the regional style of each fiddler, followed by all players jumping in a wonderful explosion of music. Fiddles and bows blaze away with one of the most exciting and memorable fiddle ensembles ever to take the stage.

Flanders & Swann plays in Theatre by the Lake’s Main House on Monday 14 November at 7.30pm, with the Blazin’ Fiddles taking to the stage the following night, Tuesday 15 November at 7.30pm. Tickets for both shows are £18 – £15 (with students and under 16s at £10), and can be booked through the Box Office on 017687 74411 or online at www.theatrebythelake.com.
