Cumbria Guide 17 September/October 2023
The kids are back at school (hooray!) and as the summer of 23 comes to a close, the leaves will start to brighten up our county with their orange hue as the autumn draws in.
September is always a busy month, as Cumbria comes alive with various exciting events across the county. Some of these events are steeped in tradition going back centuries and celebrate the history and makings of our towns and villages, such as the return of the Egremont Crab Fair, the world’s oldest fair of its kind, as well as Penrith’s Winter Droving, a celebration dating back to the 13th century.
As well as the historic-events, this year will also see some exciting and promising beginnings with the introduction of two fantastic celebrations in Whitehaven. World-class stars will descend upon the harbourside in early September to perform at Whitehaven Alive’s first full-on harbourside event! Following this, the marina’s promenades will burst with colour as Pride by the Harbourside hosts its inaugural event, celebrating life in all its colours.
Of course, this is the September-October edition, and that means we get to talk about Halloween. There is lots going on over the half term for your little ghouls to get involved with, from pumpkin picking at one of the listed patches we have included in the kid’s section to potion making at the Beacon Museum.
If you read the magazine often, you’ll know we love food and always have loads of delicious recipes for you. In this edition, we spoke to local celebrity and food guru Harrison Ward, better known as The Fell Foodie. He told us how the Cumbrian fells saved his life and introduced him to the joy of cooking outdoors. Find out more about his story inside.
We would like to thank everybody that sent in their fantastic photos for our Best of the West feature; we loved looking through them and seeing the beautiful images you have taken. We have to apologise to anybody whose images are not featured in our spread in this edition; however, we will be running similar features in the future as well as online, so please let us know if you would like your images showcased!
The next edition of the Cumbria Guide will be the big one, all about the C word—yep, Christmas!
