Comedy Capers and Evocative Folk Drama at Theatre By The Lake
Continuing Theatre by the Lake’s jam packed February schedule we are delighted to welcome back one of our favourite comedy duos, LipService Theatre on 8 and 9 February in the Main House, with a brand-new genre bending show – Mr Darcy Loses the Plot. On the same nights in the Studio we will be presenting up-and-coming playwright and singer/songwriter Lizzie Nunnery’s beautiful production Narvik.
Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding are the creative brains behind the award-winning LipService Theatre, and have been writing and performing together since 1985. They examine the world of the female writer scribbling away in secret or under pseudonyms, and recent awards include The Stage Door Foundation Award for Excellence and The Critics Award for Comedy. Previous visits to Theatre by the Lake have brought us The Picture of Doreen Gray, Inspector Norse and Withering Looks – all hugely popular with audiences.
Mr Darcy Loses the Plot sees “Britain’s favourite literary lunatics” turn their attention to the world of Jane Austen – taking apart her most renowned novels and creating something sublimely silly, with all the characters of the story played with aplomb by the two actresses.
Playing in the Studio on the same evenings we take a more dramatic turn with Narvik, a thought provoking and evocative piece by the acclaimed Lizzie Nunnery who fuses playwriting and folk music to create something truly unique. First seen at Liverpool Playhouse (where it was described as ‘thrillingly theatrical’ in a four star review from the Guardian), Narvik opens at HOME in Manchester before embarking on a national tour, and is produced by theatre company Box of Tricks.
It follows the story of Jim and Else’s war-torn relationship during World War II and was inspired by the real-life experiences of Nunnery’s grandfather, a naval radio operator in the North Atlantic during that period.
