West Cumbria theatre school students take to the West End stage
It was a night of pride, joy, and happy tears when children from a West Cumbria based theatre school took to the West End to be part of a gala performance at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre, home to the musical & Juliet. For one night only, the cast made way for Razzamataz West Cumbria, who were joined by other Razzamataz schools across the UK to put on an outstanding show, featuring songs, music, and drama.
The energy, buzz and excitement was simply electric for the performance of the Razzamataz gala and the reaction of the audience cemented this award-winning theatre school network as the place to be for talented young performers.
The commitment, talent, dedication, and teamwork were on stage for all to see with every school demonstrating absolute professionalism and a total love for performing. The opportunity for students and their families to be part of such a high-profile show and make memories to last a lifetime is a unique experience for both students and their families.

“It’s truly incredible seeing the students on such a prestigious stage doing what they love and enjoying every second of performing,” says Matty Aitchison-Rayson, Principal of Razzamataz West Cumbria. “Not many people can say they have performed on a West End stage and the life skills that comes from this type of event are experiences that they can draw on in many different future scenarios. We are committed to building young people’s confidence through exceptional experiences and giving them memories that they and their families can cherish.”
The cast of 15 children brought to life the incredible songs and storytelling that had the audience cheering along with the young performers. Titled ‘Nowhere to go but Up!’ the students and their teachers rehearsed together for months to prepare for this incredible event.
The show review for the piece reflected the high standards of commitment from the students and the hard work that the teachers and Principal put in to ensure each performer felt confident and could get the most out of the experience.
“A tribute to Mary Poppins Returns, the children exploded onto the stage with a splash of colour and beautiful vocal performance. Capturing the heart of this lovely film, the cast worked together brilliantly to allow each member to shine with each performer sparkling with huge smiles to bring the audience into this wonderful world. A special shout out to the youngest students who brought the audience to tears with the song ‘The Place Where Lost Things Go’. Prop work adds an additional challenge, but one the cast took on with professionalism using balloons to light up the stage to create that Mary Poppins magic.”
The feedback so far has been incredible with the audience of friends, families and VIPs sending in many lovely compliments including the following.

“What a marvellous performance Matty! You’re doing an amazing job nurturing the young talent, giving them confidence, promoting friendships that may last for life. Thank you for allowing us to share today’s experience with you.”
“Razz West End 2022 was worth the wait, fabulous show. All the hard work paid off and more. Was up there with the best and we are so grateful coming from a small town in West Cumbria that our daughter can chase her dreams.”

We are so thankful that Razz West Cumbria give all its pupils the confidence, enthusiasm, and support to be the best they can be, and what stars they are.”
“West Cumbria, you were all amazing, a professional performance throughout. Along with an excellent performance, each cast member has a beaming smile…. which is what it’s all about! Well done to the entire West Cumbria team.”
“Where do I begin? Razz West Cumbria’s performance of Mary Poppins returns in the Shaftesbury Theatre! What an amazing opportunity. Thank you for making dreams become realities. Smiles from ear to ear, Incredible to watch. The talent was phenomenal. Well done to Matty, Sophie, Amber, Ellie & the rest of the team. You are fabulous.”

These wonderful reviews and the way the students conducted themselves both on and off stage are testament to the school’s ethos that includes ensuring the children have fun, meet new friends, build confidence, and learn skills in the performing arts. This performance is just one of the ways students have of showcasing all they learn every week at the theatre school.
Razzamataz creates ‘triple threat performers’ meaning students leave being skilled in dance, drama and singing. During their time at Razzamataz, they will cover lots of different genres from classic West End musical theatre through to acting for camera, street dance and pop singing. There are lots of opportunities to perform locally and on London’s West End stage and many students are securing professional work, filming adverts, and performing professionally in theatre.
The fun classes are for all children whatever their background or ability and there is a strong focus on improving both physical and mental health. Classes start at age 2 and go on to 18 and there are lots of opportunities to perform giving children the opportunity to grow in confidence.
