The Beacon
Chinese New Year Workshops – Masks and Lanterns
All Week
Celebrate the start of the Chinese Year of the Dog by making some of your own Chinese creations. Throughout half-term week, The Beacon Museum is running a series of hands-on workshops, with the option of creating your own dragon or Chinese lantern. A great opportunity for all ages to learn more about Chinese culture, including some useful Mandarin phrases to prepare you for the New Year ahead. All ages welcome £5 per person.

Banner Making Workshop
All Week
As part of the Celebrating Women of Cumbria Festival, little women (and men) can get involved by creating their own unique banner to go on display in the Beacon Museum.
The workshops throughout half-term will see participants creating unique and memorable banners – with the guidance of the museum’s crafting experts – inspired by the current exhibitions. From the Holocaust to Historic Women of Cumbria, let your imagination run wild. All ages welcome £5 per person.

Theatre by the Lake
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Tuesday 13 February
On Tuesday 13 February join the Walrus and Carpenter, with some eager Oysters, on their hunt for a gourmet picnic spot. This musical show, based around Lewis Carroll’s famous poem from Alice Through The Looking Glass, is set to accompaniment on the accordion and features a large weepy walrus puppet and his lugubrious chippy companion. The comical characters make entertaining company for all ages, expect hilarity, eye-watering recitation, song and slapstick in a salty combination of theatre and haute cuisine. There are two parts to this event, a craft workshop and a show. Participation in both is strongly encouraged. Suitable for ages four and above.

The Chit Chat Chalk Show
Wednesday 14 – Friday 16 February
Join Hawk Dance Theatre and The Knotted Project on this magical chalky adventure for three to eight year olds. Showing from Wednesday 14 – Friday 16 February, The Chit Chat Chalk Show is charming and packed with interaction for children and their families. Sitting amongst the set and performers, the children in the audience play an essential part in helping Kiko – a confused young girl struggling to understand how she feels about the strange new world she lives in – on her journey. With a cast of skilled performers, the story dances, draws and giggles its way through from beginning to end. The Chit Chat Chalk Show is sure to put a smile on faces, young and old. Don’t forget, this interactive show could get a little bit chalky, so wear suitable clothing.

Kirkgate Arts Centre
Paddington 2
Friday 16 February
There’s also family fun in Cockermouth this spring half term with the Paddington 2 screening at the Kirkgate. Based on the best-selling and internationally adored series of children’s stories by British author Michael Bond, which have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, Paddington has been translated into over 40 languages and captured the imagination of children and adults around the globe. After the resounding success of his first screen outing, the irresistible bear turns detective in this second cinematic interpretation of the beloved children’s books. Helmed by twice BAFTA nominated director Paul King the film features Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters and Hugh Grant.

Helena Thompson Museum
My Little Pony
Wednesday 14 February
On Wednesday, the Helena Thompson Museum is offering parents a welcome window of respite, with a screening of the ‘My Little Pony Movie’ as part of their free film afternoon. Showing from 12pm – 1.45pm, refreshments will also be available and there’s no need to book. Rejoice.
