The new year is here and Workington Playgoers are gearing up for their season launch. They begin with two hard-hitting shows coming up at the Theatre Royal in Workington.
Wed 16th – Sat 19th Jan 2019

Get ready for some thought-provoking drama at Workington’s Theatre Royal in early 2019. Mid-January sees a Theatre Royal Youth Production of Girls Like That, Evan Placey’s exploration of what happens when a compromising photograph of a schoolgirl goes viral, rumours spread across smartphones like wildfire and her reputation is poisoned, threatening to shatter the fragile bonds of friendship between a group of girls who have grown up together. This challenging play is the first production by older members of Theatre Royal Youth and includes strong language and some adult content. It will make fascinating viewing for teenagers and their parents.

In early February, the Workington Playgoers will be tackling a masterpiece of American drama, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee. Written in the 1960s, this portrayal of a destructive marriage, based on toxic illusions, has lost none of its power to shock. George is a middle-aged history professor at an American college. He and his wife Martha attend a faculty party and return home in the early hours of the morning, when George discovers, much to his displeasure, that Martha has invited a new professor and his young wife to their home for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s terrifying games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.
