Quartet Malamatina, and live music highlights at Carlisle Cathedral
International guitar group, Quartet Malamatina, make their Carlisle debut at the Fratry Hall on Monday 6 March, kicking off a year of live music events at the Cathedral.
Lauded for their “immensely colourful, lyrical and expressive playing” (Laura Snowden), Quartet Malamatina is an international guitar quartet made up of players from England, Scotland, Canada and the USA, who first got together for a performance at the 2021 UN Climate Conference to accompany a screening of the Leo Brouwer’s film Cuban Landscape. Since then they’ve built upon culturally diverse and longstanding traditions of music for guitar ensemble performing, arranging and engaging with venues and artists across the UK and overseas.
On 6 March they visit Carlisle’s Fratry Hall for the first time, playing an eclectic programme of both classic and contemporary pieces – the setlist includes works by Luigi Boccherini (18th-century) right through to Clarice Assad’s Brazilian-inspired Dança Nativas suite, written in 2008. Expect the unexpected from their Cancion y danza programme.

This concert continues a flourishing series of live music events at the Cathedral which includes both free daytime recitals and large-scale concerts. The newly-refurbished Fratry Hall is now home to Carlisle Music Society who bring renowned classical musicians to Carlisle for their increasingly popular seasons; in June the Cathedral itself plays host to the London Film Music Orchestra playing the music of Hans Zimmer and John Williams; and in November the Christmas season gets an early start with G4 bringing their festive tour to the Cathedral for the first time. All of this plus the Cathedral Choir staging their own concerts for Easter, Summer and Christmas ensure that the musical life of the Cathedral has never been more diverse.
