Preparing For The Umbrella Parade
Moorclose Community Centre hosted a ‘Bling Your Brolly’ workshop on Saturday 25 November in preparation for the town’s annual umbrella parade.
The parade is organised by Workington Town Council as part of the festive celebrations for the Christmas Lights Switch On which takes place on Saturday 2 December.
South Workington Youth Partnership (SWYP) led the umbrella decorating workshop as well as holding sessions in local schools. Over 100 children have taken part so far and have created umbrellas decorated with glitter, tinsel, and battery powered lights.
Anyone can join the parade, even if they haven’t attended a workshop, but they are encouraged to bring along a ‘bling’ brolly. We asked SWYP for some top decorating tips:
- Be creative! The most important rule is to be creative and have fun.
- Be bright. The parade takes place in the evening so use glitter, fairy lights, and tinsel to make your design sparkle in the evening light.
- Be careful. If you have little ones working on the umbrella, make sure they are supervised at all times, especially when using scissors, glue or paint.
The parade assembles during the Christmas Festival on Saturday 2 December at 5.15pm next to Workington Leisure Centre. The parade then processes towards the main stage on Murray Road in time for the lights switch on at 6pm.
