Located beneath the beautiful Skiddaw fell, The Sun Inn sits in the heart of Bassenthwaite village, and over the years has become so much more than just a good place to stop for a drink or a hearty meal, it’s become a community hub.
When you visit the Sun you can expect a friendly welcome, a relaxed atmosphere and of course delicious food and a great selection of drinks. Their menu offers up everything you could want from a country pub from traditional steak pie, fish and chips to a good burger. They also cater for all dietary requirements so everyone can enjoy a meal.

With a great selection of beer, including two resident real ales as well as seasonal guest ales there’s always a good variety to choose from and often something different when you return.
The pub boasts a roaring open fire which is perfect for warming your bones after a brisk winter walk, of which there are many to choose from surrounding the pub, including the popular Skiddaw trail, making it the ideal pit stop before heading home.
The Summer of 2023 saw the pub awarded the CAMRA Pub of the Season award recognition of the fact they have made the pub a thriving community resource as well as an attractive place for tourists.
Being set in such a beautiful rural location, the pub welcomes many walkers, cyclists and well behaved dogs to join you both inside and outside the inn, they have even provided a dog bar and a doggie menu so your four legged friends can enjoy refreshments and a full belly too!
They serve lunch and evening meals all week, Monday to Saturday as well as Sunday roasts, their menus are supplemented by weekly specials.
Their large beer garden is fantastic for enjoying a pint whatever the season, whether you’re visiting in these crisp, frosty winter months or in the height of summer it’s a fantastic place to come together with friends and family to eat, drink and be merry!
Once a month the pub also hosts a pub quiz which is a great excuse to get out, have a laugh with friends and test your knowledge. The upcoming dates for the quiz are Sunday 14th January and Sunday 11th of February.
