Lanercost hosts arts and crafts showcase in the Dacre Hall
For most of August, the Craftsmen at the Priory exhibition and sale will be taking over the Dacre Hall at Lanercost Priory near Brampton. Artists and designer makers from across Cumbria and beyond will be taking part, including six who will be new to the event.
“It was so good to be back last summer,” says Tricia Meynell of Castle Carrock, a fine art and abstract photographer and one of the organising team, “and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more people this year. Craftsmen at the Priory has always had a reputation for high quality work and the exhibition this year will be no exception.”
A group of craftspeople has been exhibiting in the Dacre Hall each summer since 1978 and Tricia is one of the core group that organises the event. Others in that core are Denise Huddleston (textile artist and print maker), Carolyn Marr (ceramicist), Julia Neubauer (knitwear designer) and Richard and Mary Kennedy (furniture maker/woodcarver and artist respectively).
“We’re all about celebrating the quality and variety of contemporary craft and creativity,” says Tricia. “Several of our recent favourites are involved this year, including members of the Withy Crafters with a huge selection of their baskets and basketwork, Liz Jones with her distinctive printed textiles and Nancye Church with a selection of her beautiful silver work and jewellery.”
New to Craftsmen at the Priory this year will be Mariana Klymchuk, a Ukrainian artist from Kyiv currently living in Cumbria, Nikki Clark, a glassmaker, Martin Evans, a painter, Polly Marix-Evans, a printmaker, Yorkshire-based paper artist, Anuska Wittmann and Cath Ball, who trades as Stitched Ceramics.
With a gallery of prints, original photographs and paintings, a large exhibition in the historic Dacre Hall and a sales area for other locally-made crafts and goods, there will be plenty to see and buy for just the £1 admission charge.
The Craftsmen at the Priory 2022 exhibition will be in the historic Dacre Hall at Lanercost from Wednesday 3 August to Tuesday 30 August and it will be open every day from 10am to 5pm. On the opening day, there will be an evening Preview event from 7pm to 9pm with a 10% discount on all sales and opportunities to meet many of the exhibitors. For the latest information about Craftsmen at the Priory for 202s, see the website at www.cumbriacrafts.co.uk and Follow the group on Facebook (Craftsmen at the Priory) or on Instagram @Craftsmen at the Priory.
