Exciting Changes Announced for Cumbria Slimming World Members
Slimming World says goodbye to ‘Syns’ and introduces healthy fats category from January 2026
Slimming World Consultants and Managers across Cumbria have announced that, from January 2026, the organisation will retire the term ‘Syns’ and introduce a new Healthy Fats category as part of a refreshed plan designed to reflect modern lifestyles and promote a balanced approach to healthy eating.
The UK and Ireland’s leading weight management organisation says the updates follow a full review of its language, plan and terminology, overseen by its Nutrition, Research and Health Department, and supported by linguistics experts.
From January 2026, foods such as avocado, olive oil and nut butters will be easier to incorporate into members’ daily plans. The changes place greater emphasis on the health benefits of these foods and will encourage members to include healthy fats as part of a balanced diet.
“Language matters”
Kelly, who runs Slimming World groups in Egremont and Cleator Moor, says:
“Slimming World’s ethos hasn’t changed since our founder, Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE, launched the company in 1969. We continue to inspire people to make positive mindset changes and develop lasting, healthy habits around food and activity in a culture of care, respect and understanding.”
“With the rise of weight loss medications, evidence-based and supportive approaches like Slimming World’s are more important than ever. We want everyone to know they’ll be welcomed and supported in our groups — whether they’re using medication or not. The decision to move away from the word ‘Syns’ reflects our belief that language matters. For some, the term was misunderstood or even off-putting, and we never want language to be a barrier to someone finding support.”
A new way to talk about healthy living
Slimming World’s flexible eating plan — centred around more than 350 ‘Free Foods’ such as lean meats, poultry, fish, plant-based proteins, eggs, fruit, vegetables, grains, potatoes and pasta — has helped millions lose weight since 1969.
From 2026, foods that are higher in energy density but still play an important role in a balanced lifestyle, such as alcohol, crisps, chocolate, sauces and butter, will now be known as ‘Swips’ (Slimming World Individual Picks).
Kelly explains:
“No food has ever been banned at Slimming World. The introduction of Swips is about supporting people to enjoy their favourite foods without guilt, helping members build a healthy relationship with food that lasts for life.”
Healthy Extras get an update
In addition to fibre and calcium-rich foods, members will now be able to include healthy fats — like nuts, seeds, nut butters, avocado and oils — as part of their daily Healthy Extra choices. Members will be encouraged to enjoy a variety of Healthy Extras for overall health, including at least one calcium-rich option per day.
Simplified, modernised language
Two familiar Slimming World terms will also be updated:
-
‘Body Magic’ will become Slimming World’s Active Lifestyle Programme
-
‘IMAGE Therapy’ will become Slimming World’s Support System
These updates will appear on the Slimming World website and app from mid-December 2025, with printed materials reflecting the changes from 26 December 2025. A new, refreshed logo will also be unveiled.
Kelly adds:
“These updates are rooted in science and shaped by feedback from members. They reflect how people live and eat today, helping everyone lose weight in a way that’s healthy, enjoyable and sustainable.”
“There’s no need to wait until January to make a start — beginning your journey now means heading into the New Year feeling lighter, healthier and more confident.”
