Cumbria Guide 15 May – June 2023
Who else is loving the season? I am, that’s for sure. Long, drawn-out days, sunshine, warmth, and amazing photographs popping up here and there and everywhere across every social media feed—it doesn’t get any better.
The Romans are back in force, as you will see inside; there is not long to go until one of the most exciting excavations gets underway, sited right next to the Roman Army Museum at Greenhead. Roman Magna is something else, and they have yet to break ground. Watch this space as what was formerly the home of Syrian archers and Dalmatian mountain soldiers is about to be explored, and this site is bigger than Vindolanda. It is going to be a game-changer.
Meanwhile, over at The Beacon Museum, the Romans have landed there for a few months with a brilliant new exhibition, and Senhouse Roman Museum has many events coming up as well as their world-famous permanent exhibition. Also, a new excavation is about to take place at Carlisle Cricket Club, so stay tuned, as this site has brought up so many cracking finds over the years.
We have so many brilliant and talented folk to shout about, and inside we look at the work of artists like Cara Wylie, who is unbelievable, and Beardy Synergy, who take centre stage.
Many musicians have been busy writing, recording, and releasing singles, so we caught up with West Cumbrian artists Grace Price and Hollie Hollie Rhiannon.
Talking of music, it is great to see Cockermouth LIVE return in June—a festival for all, with some cracking acts taking to The Kirkgate Stage. See inside to find out who
“Wainwright,” King of the Fells, and “Athelstan,” The King Who Couldn’t Conquer Our Fells, both feature within, and both are cracking articles, obviously not written by me, so enjoy.
The future of Whitehaven is looking a lot brighter these days and will even more so as The Wave returns to illuminate the harbour, and we can’t wait. Many awesome events are heading to the harborside and town this summer; dive inside to find out what’s coming up.
Right, that’s enough from me.
I hope you all have a brilliant time and enjoy the beginning of summer. I’m off to charge my detector and dig up as many ring pulls as I can while taking in the stunning scenery all around.
Perfect…. Happy Days, eh! Stephen
