Sacred Space Quiet Day at Carlisle Cathedral
This May, Carlisle Cathedral are giving us all a chance to take some time out of our busy lives, reconnect spiritually and personally with ourselves at a special ‘quiet day’.
We live in a noisy world in all senses, and sometimes our religious life can seem equally voluminous. So much so that it can be hard to hear that ‘still small voice’ within and to simply have time to ‘let God be God’. A quiet day enables us to drop out of our busy exterior and interior lives for a while and pay full attention to the needs of our souls – for deeper personal connection to and relationship in the One in whom ‘we live and move and have our being.’ This Quiet Day will offer just that, time to reflect deeply both in solitude and with short group gathering to share experiences. To help that we’ll draw on several Jesus stories as ‘slow food’ for the soul, give them time for contemplation, discover new insights, and nurture deeper relationship in the Beloved. While the day will encourage deep silence with the words of Jesus as our guide, this will be an event that is inclusive and open to all. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own notebook or journal to keep a record of the day, or simply come along with an open heart.
The day will be led by Stephen Wright who has spent many decades exploring spirituality specifically, because of his academic and nursing background, in relation to health as well as his own spiritual awakening. He is a member of the Iona Community and the Anglican Church, and a teacher of the contemplative Way. A poet and pilgrim, his latest work with Wild Goose Publishing is the book The Kentigern Way: A Life and Lakeland Pilgrimage which focuses on the life of St. Kentigern and offers a pilgrimage route around the Northern Fells of Cumbria. His many other books are informed by 20 years of work with, and the teachings offered by, the Kentigern School for Contemplatives, supported by the Diocese of Carlisle. He’s a Fellow and visiting professor at the University of Cumbria, and at the age of 73 he still finds fulfilment working as a trustee and spiritual director for the Sacred Space Foundation.
Tickets for the Quiet Day are now available to book online via the Cathedral’s website, or in person from the gift shop, priced at £17.50, which includes a soup and sandwich lunch and refreshments. The day begins at 10am and will conclude with Evening Prayer in the Cathedral at 3pm (optional). There will also be a suitable break at 12.30pm for those who wish to attend our lunchtime Eucharist service.
