This year marks a major milestone for Whitehaven’s beloved independent jeweller, J.O. Dixon, as they celebrate an impressive 55 years of craftsmanship, dedication, and family legacy.
Founded in 1970 by John Dixon, the store has been a staple in the community, creating timeless pieces that symbolize love, celebration, and commitment.
The story of J.O. Dixon Jeweller began with a simple yet heartfelt gesture. John Dixon, an accountant by trade, bought the business for his mother, Ada, because she disliked working in the family’s fishmonger business. His mother ran the shop for the first few months, then John joined her when business began to grow.
Helen Dixon, John’s daughter, has now been part of the business for 25 years, running it for the last 8 years following the retirement of her parents. Reflecting on the past, she shared, “I miss Dad’s input in decision-making. He always had a great eye for what would work, and I enjoyed working with him (although we didn’t always see eye to eye). But the business is still going strong, so I must be doing something right!”
The early days weren’t without challenges. Helen remembers her Nana’s initial struggles, “On the first day, she sold just one watch strap. It was tough, as people didn’t have disposable income for luxury items like jewellery back then. But with perseverance, the business grew, and soon my dad and mum joined her.” The journey of their family business has been one of unwavering commitment to quality and customer service.
As an independent business, J.O. Dixon Jewellers has thrived by staying nimble, adapting to the needs of the times, and offering the freedom to stock a wide variety of jewellery pieces. Helen explains, “Being independent means I have the flexibility to choose what we stock, offering pieces from different designers and manufacturers. We have something for every budget, from a pair of silver earrings for £4 to a diamond ring for £6,000. We’ve always prided ourselves on offering fair prices, without the inflated overheads that larger companies may need to impose.”
J.O. Dixon’s appeal lies in its personal touch. The shop offers bespoke design services and a range of repairs, including resizing rings, restoring old jewellery, and even remodelling family heirlooms.
Helen adds, “We have a real passion for what we do. I still feel like a kid in a sweet shop when the sales reps come to show us new designs. It’s exciting to find pieces that will bring joy to our customers. We’ve always aimed to offer quality, unique jewellery that you won’t find anywhere else.”
Over the years, the store has become renowned for its extensive range of wedding rings. “We’ve had a lot of compliments about the variety of wedding ring styles we offer,” says Helen. “From plain bands to diamond-encrusted beauties, we have something for every couple. Gents’ tungsten and titanium rings have become quite popular, offering a stylish alternative to the classic gold band.”
J.O. Dixon’s reputation for quality and customer care has earned it loyal customers who return year after year. “One of the best things about running the business is hearing from customers who’ve bought jewellery here for generations. It’s special to know that the pieces we create have become part of family history,” says Helen.
As the business continues to flourish, Helen remains grateful for the customers who have supported them over the years. “We couldn’t have made it this far without the continued support of our wonderful customers. We pride ourselves on offering exceptional service, and it’s great to see that people appreciate the personal touch that comes with a small, independent business.”
