The Sunflower Fields; Cumbria’s very own fields of gold

The Sunflower Fields

Cumbria’s very own fields of gold.

For the last five years Crummock Bank farm has opened its gates to allow the public to come through and see something truly magical.

Their fields of sunflowers span to the horizon, the glow of millions of beautiful golden flowers fills the surrounding landscape and you really do feel as though you’ve stepped into another dimension.  An ideal place to bring a picnic and dont forget your camera!

A plant that has the power to make anyone smile and is a symbol of happiness Neil started the field after his children suggested it as something to make their dad smile. He said, “It was actually my kid’s idea. I have always wanted to have a sunflower field. After spending a lot of time in France, you’d pass acres and acres of fields just filled with sunflowers. It was always something I wanted.

I was going through a difficult time, and my children suggested we plant some sunflowers as a way to bring me some joy. I imagined maybe 10 sunflowers; instead, I ended up with 10 kilos of seed, which we sowed, and it just went from there!”

The fields are open from July to September however with the weather earlier this year being so extreme the flowers have not yet bloomed, and as with everything in nature there are no guarantees, however all being well it is hoped the flowers will be in full bloom by August!

If you are trying to think of ideas for days out this Summer then head to Crummock Bank farm near Wigton, and all being well you’ll get to spend a day surrounded by beautiful flowers.
