Learn something new at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve this June
From photography to plants, and bugs to bogs, there are events for all interests at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve this June. Learn how to take the perfect photo, identify that mysterious insect, brush up on your botany, or enjoy a wetland wander at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s beautiful upland nature reserve near Penrith.
On Friday 1st June (10:00am – 4:00pm) join professional photographer Andrew Heptinstall for a digital photography workshop that will help you get the most from your DSLR camera, gain confidence using manual settings, and take home some top tips for capturing better photographs. A refundable deposit of £60 is required to secure a place on this event.
Ever wanted to know how to tell a grasshopper from a cricket? Bemused by beetles and (true) bugs? Join Cumbria Wildlife Trust on Saturday 2nd June (10:00am – 4:00pm) for an introduction to invertebrates with Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre and learn how to start identifying insects. A refundable deposit of £35 is required to secure a place on this event.
On Tuesday 12th June (10.30am – 12.30pm) venture off the path to discover what makes the Eycott Hill wetlands nationally important, and look for wetland plants including sundew, orchids, and marsh cinquefoil with the nature reserve officer.
Improve your botany at a wildflower ID course on Friday 15th June (10.00am – 4.00pm) in Eycott Hill Nature Reserve’s flower rich meadows and learn how to identify different species using a key, books, and a hand lens. A refundable deposit of £25 is required to secure a place on this event.
A series of free guided walks and a cycle ride offer more opportunities to learn about what makes this fantastic upland nature reserve so special, and enjoy wonderful views of the northern fells. Walks take place on Tuesday 5th June (10.30am – 12.30pm) and Thursday 21st June (6.00pm – 8.00pm) and the cycle ride from Greystoke is on Saturday 23rd June at 10:30am (bookable via www.letsride.co.uk).

Events at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve are possible thanks to National Lottery Players, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which awarded £1.6 million towards the purchase price and an ongoing five year programme of conservation and activities to benefit wildlife and people.
Located between Keswick and Penrith, near to the village of Mungrisdale, Eycott Hill Nature Reserve is 216 hectares of exceptionally rich wildlife habitat and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the plant life in the wetlands and its geology.
