Evocative storytelling concert comes to Theatre by the Lake
On 8 April, Theatre by the Lake welcomes Olivier Award-nominated singer Elizabeth Mansfield and her accompanying pianist Stephen Rose to Keswick with their storytelling concert performance piece Clara’s Gift. It’s Leipzig, late summer 1840. An unknown composer gives his beloved fiancée a special gift on the eve of their long awaited wedding…a cycle of eight beautiful songs. Songs which strangely foretell the lovers’ own story.Clara’s Gift weaves the dramatic narrative of Robert and Clara Schumann’s lives through Schumann’s famous Frauenliebe songs, sung in new English translations for the first time.
The couple’s love letters and passages from Janice Galloway’s wonderful novel Clara, together with the poetry of the songs, combine to make a truly magical evening, which culminates in a concert performance of the song cycle, sung in the original German.
Elizabeth Mansfield recently played Nell in The Restoration of Nell Gwyn at York Theatre Royal, on tour, and at the Park Theatre, London. Elizabeth and Stephen Rose have performed many times together – including the acclaimed Portraits in Song – Edith Piaf and Bertolt Brecht. In Clara’s Gift they bring together the fruits of their long standing musical partnership to a much-loved classical work.
Elizabeth said: “Robert and Clara would surely have loved Derwentwater! I can’t imagine bringing their story and Schumann’s evocative songs to a more beautiful place.”
