SUMMARY:Award-Winning Folk Troupe Head to Florence Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning folk troupe head to Florence Arts Centre this Saturday night. \nSaturday 10 February: \nEgremont’s Florence Arts Centre has a year of live music lined up for 2018 with local musicians programmed alongside touring acts from across the musical spectrum. This Saturday they welcome NorthEast contemporary folk sextet Pons Aelius for a night of soaring live folk tunes. \nThe six-piece are an ambitious young instrumental sextet exploring the traditional and contemporary folk musics of Britain and beyond\, with bold arrangements and an arsenal of instruments\, the band melds age-old traditions with a fresh and innovative attitude. Since winning a prestigious Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award in their early days\, Pons Aelius have spent the last two years tirelessly honing their sound on stages both at home and abroad\, quickly earning themselves a reputation as one of the most exciting new names on the circuit. In September 2017\, they released their much awaited debut album Captain Glen’s Comfort\, to rave reviews. \nMembers of the band met on the Newcastle folk scene\, are are currently touring the UK and Europe to support the album’s release leaving nothing but stunned audiences behind. Their live set will include original compositions and their own take on traditional songs – roof-raising reels and jigs\, and haunting ballads. Regulars to Florence’s live music nights may recognise members Alasdair and Callum who have previously played at the venue as part of the Manx folk group Birlinn Jiarg. \nTickets for the show are available now from the venue’s website\, or in person at the box office (open Wednesday to Sunday\, 10am to 4pm). \n  \n
