Corrie Comes to Whitehaven

Local Corrie fans were sent into a frenzy as film crews were spotted setting up in Whitehaven.

We first learned that the long running ITV soap, Coronation Street, would be visiting west Cumbria last week, when the crew are said to have completed a recce of the harbourside. On Monday 5 February, a number of vehicles arrived on the site, with filming expected to take place today (Tuesday 6) and throughout the week.

The sighting of Corrie ‘baddie’ Pat Phelan’s distinctive red van parked in the Wellington Pit car park has sent rumours circulating on social media. Fans of the show are speculating that the villain could be about to get his comeuppance, after the show’s producer Kate Oates confirmed that Phelan’s downfall would come in 2018. There are even rumours that he could be about to meet his grisly end in the harbour itself

Last night Corre superfans headed down to the set to catch a glimpse of the stars of the show, with some even managing to steal a shot or two of actor Connor McIntyre who plays Pat Phelan.

And viewers have been quick to have their say on Facebook, with many relieved the storyline is finally coming to a head. Although there’s no doubt that Connor’s acting skills have left them impressed.

John Welsh on Facebook said: “Like his character or not, the actor plays a great part.”

Amanda Wilson commented: “Hurry up and get rid of him don’t like him one bit plays a good part but still don’t like him.”

Karen Shane added: “Thank God.. it’s getting ridiculous.. but he is a very good actor, shame they didn’t make him a likable character.”

Connor’s character, Pat, has terrorised the cobbles for the last few years, most recently killing mechanic Luke Britton. In shocking scenes for the soap, last year he forced Andy Carver – who had secretly been held captive in a cellar – to shoot his former business partner Vinny before turning the gun on Andy himself. In episodes recently aired, his arch enemy Anna Windass, who he raped, has recently been wrongly sentenced after Pat framed her for a crime she didn’t commit. And all this without his doting wife Eileen Grimshaw suspecting a thing.

However, it seems all that is about to change, as producer Kate told the Radio Times that his downfall “is very much to do with Eileen”. Might we be catching a glimpse of her down on the harbourside this week too?
