Exciting times ahead for Jolan

2017 is certainly shaping up to be a memorable one for Cumbria’s very own pop talent, Jolan.

Following his success on the popular singing contest, The Voice UK, last year, Jolan has been busy in the studio preparing for the release of his latest material, although he is keeping a tight seal on what that may be.

Jolan said: “It’s absolutely manic, but it’s been amazing.  The guys I’m working with are incredible, the whole team is just amazing, from the song writers to the musicians.  I can’t give much away, but I am really looking forward to the next few months.”

2016 proved to be a whirlwind year for the 23-year-old singer after placing second in the BBC competition which saw him wow judges including Tom Jones and Paloma Faith. Not long after, Jolan featured on the track ‘Keep It On Time’ with electronic dance producers, Prezidents before dropping his first EP in November, much to the delight of his fans.

On the release of the EP, one fan commented: ‘He has an amazing voice. Glad he has released something after The Voice – he should have won.’

Following its release, the EP managed to place in the Top 10 iTunes pop charts, sandwiched between Michael Buble and Little Mix.  Jolan said: “That is quite the sandwich to be in the middle of. After the dance track with Prezident I wanted to do something extra. We didn’t do a lot of promotion surrounding the EP, just a couple of teasers so I wasn’t expecting the reaction at all.”

Released via Virgin EMI, the four-track EP features cover versions from a number of renowned artists, including Prince who Jolan refers to as his ‘musical hero’ and The 1975. The EP opens with an upbeat cover of Terence Trent D’Arby’s ‘Wishing Well’ and takes a soulful turn with Beyonce’s single, ‘XO’.  Additionally, live versions of the tracks which include ‘Somebody Else’ and ‘Purple Rain accompany the EP.

Jolan added:  “People can sometimes be quite judgemental with covers, thinking they won’t be as good as the original but I wanted to pay homage to The Voice, and the response has been amazing. It reached number nine on the iTunes store so that was lovely to see.”

During his time on the BBC talent series, Jolan was mentored by coach Ricky Wilson – the frontman of rock group the Kaiser Chiefs.
